Howdy,
I attended my first TG summit at the SASS convention in Las Vegas. At the summit, there was a lot of discussion in revamping the Shooters, RO I and RO II handbooks. They are posted on the SASS web sight. I recommend taking some time to review all the changes.
Here are some agenda items brought up for a vote at the summit.
1. The Modern and Traditional categories have been combined into one category. Go to the SASS online Shooters Handbook pg. 13 for complete details. The Long Riders will still use the Modern, Traditional categories.
2. The Ruger Montago non mounted revolver has been approved. The non mounted version does not have the grip frame serrations. The Super Blackhawk/Montago hammers are allowed on both adjustable and traditional revolvers except the Bisley model.
3. SASS now allows ejectors on single shot shotguns.
4. All long guns staged horizontally shall be laying flat where at least the rear of the trigger guard is on the staging area. All handguns must be staged with the entire handgun lying flat on the staging area.
5. Rule clarifications:
A. For Cap&Ball shooters. If a particular stage requires a one shot reload, the sixth chamber of percussion revolvers may be charged at the bench and then capped “ on the clock” either before the first round is fired or after the last round is fired.
B. Clarification for safe movement for shotguns. “Hammer FULLY down on an expended round”. “ Action Open, round round on carrier or in the chamber.
C. Clarification of the rule, “No gun may be de-cocked on the firing line except by pointing it down-range and pulling the trigger or while under the direct supervision of a staged officer” The penalty is a Stage DQ. The new wording will allow de-cocking at the loading bench to allow shooters to make corrections as necessary to be sure no round is under the firing pin and on a empty chamber.
6. All clothing and equipment MUST BE worn appropriately, how it was intended and how it would have been worn in the Old West or as seen in B-Western movies and Television.
7. Outlawed “ All clothing displaying manufacture’s or sponsors logos” Manufacture’s labels on apparel or equipment are acceptable.
8. Strict enforcement of the cross-draw holster. Wearing a holster more than 30 degrees is illegal and is a Stage DQ. The measuring for the 30 degree cant is the way the holster sits with the shooter in a standing upright position.
I will have a protractor at each shoot if a shooter wants to check there holster.
Respectfully submitted,
Nawlins Kid
You’re minding your own business in town one fine spring Sunday afternoon, just watching the stages go by as you unload cargo while the residents walking around town, still in their Sunday best. Then an unruly bunch of ne’er-do-wells rides into town and decides to take liberties with the townsfolk. They didn’t notice you- bad news for them, good news for the locals as you spring into action to their defense! Watch your aim- there are bystanders out there that will need to be kept alive to testify to your sound character when it’s all over.
One way to restock the larder is to fill it with fresh game. Make every shot count, your family deserves to eat well.
One thing that’s been really slow in coming this winter was the pay for the local law. Somehow the taxes got collected but the salaries didn’t return… go figure. Now the AT&SF road is trying to get a badly-needed supply train through from Topeka. What isn’t generally known is that the train is also carrying several thousand dollars of government salaries in its caboose. As the conductor you are responsible for the safety of a train’s passengers and crew… and their money.
Here they come again, happens every spring.Doctor Ebenezer Peckinpaw’s prize chicks have escaped his farm and have descended on your fields, snapping up the fresh sprouts that help feed your own stock. And the Doc sent a few armed farmhands to retrieve his award-winning peepers, and now they accuse you of making the hole in the fence! Their first round just misses you but hits your house and you hear a scream inside… better get these guys to stop, and fast!
It seems it’s been months since you have seen the sun, and when you did it felt as cold as the wintry wind running across the plains. The going’s been long, rough and taxing on your supplies, so it’s with great relief that spring finally arrives. Spring brings forth flowers, leaves, and other signs that the great pattern of life has begun to repeat once again. But the spring also awakens a herd of hungry hounds, all hankering for a hearty helping of your potable provisions.

Counters count Hits only, last shot stops the clock. Time breaks ties in number of hits only.
IF time allows, shooters may shot a second gun of a different caliber, but must wait until all shooters have completed their first gun.

The first shoot is behind us and went very well! I hope everyone is getting used to the new website format. I have received a few nice comments, but no one has reported any problems – yet. The scores are now ready on the system as well. Look above in the menu labeled “Match Results”, sub-menu “2009″, then either “Match Scores” and “April 09 Match” or “April 09 Long Range” and “Range Scores”.
As Raunchy mentioned, the new target was tested successfully at the April shoot. Although it may not sing like the old ones, there was no lead splatter reported and the target remained standing on it’s own (at the high setting) without any staking. After the shoot, we looked at the ground around the target and there was a nice trench in front of the target with near perfect “squashed” and spent lead bullets.
We have received payments on the challenges and donations. Some more folks have come out of hibernation and met the challenges as well. Although we have placed our order (update – the targets are HERE!), there is still some time remaining to make a contribution. If you cannot afford to buy a target or $50 challenge, we could use any contribution you can make! If you cannot afford to spend the money this month, we will accept I.O.U.’s for payment later in the year. Please send any donations in to Calamity Janet.
As promised, we are publishing the 3-Day Shoot Application early this year so you can plan/budget earlier for attending the event. We are going with a new caterer, per the annual meeting vote, but it will cost us more. The Vile Bunch decided that we will use the Long Rider portion of 50-50 proceeds in the next 3 months to help offset the cost. However, we did need to raise the dinner price by $2 to help ensure that we do not lose too much money.
If you are online, you will find the 3-Day Application under the “3 Day Shoot”, “2009″, “3-Day Shoot Application”. Please fill the 3-Day Application form out and send in the printed confirmation with your check to Calamity Janet before August 1st. For our snail-mail friends, see the attached application and follow the instructions on the form before August 1st.
See you out on the range!
