3-Day Shoot – Tintypes

Silver Nitrate (formerly known as Broken Hand and MC Walker – don’t mess with this guy – he has a string of aliases!) is once again offering to take tintype pictures at the 3-Day Shoot for a nominal fee.

Size Price
1/4 plate $35
5×7 $50

So get out yer fancy duds and get yer picture taken the old fashioned way!

Trail Boss

The date for the 3-Day Shoot is just around the corner. Get yer guns and duds ready!

Nawlins Kid and I just got back from "The Great Nor’easter" (2009 SASS New England Regional) held in Pelham, NH. It was a fun shoot and we picked up tips from many good shooters, including Evil Roy – who by the way, shoots reduced but not wimpy loads!

Just a reminder, we will have a 45/70 H&R Single-Shot Rifle for the raffle this year. You do not need to be present to win and tickets will be $5 each or 5 tickets for $20. The 3-Day Raffles and Auction will continue based upon your generous donations. Please bring something cowboy/cowgirl-ish to the shoot. Also, raffle and auction items that significant others and little cowpokes like are appreciated too! Given the state of the economy, vendor donations are down, but we hope club members will help out with their own donations.

The raffle items will be setup Saturday morning while we shoot and tickets will be available for purchase at lunchtime on Saturday. We will continue to have 2 different colored tickets at 50 cents and $1 levels. And don’t forget the 50/50 raffle – it is a quick and easy way to donate to the club and maybe share in half the proceeds. Your odds are certainly much better than the Lotto!

Back by popular demand, the Cowboy Casino will be in the Clubhouse after the catered dinner. Casino cowboy and cowgirl workers will be limited to bidding on 1 item at the auction, so if you volunteer, make that bid count. Participants can bid on any number of prizes using pazoozas. A banker will be available to convert your dollars to Pazoozas, in case you lose your shirt at the table with your Trail Earnings (pazoozas in your packet).

If you haven’t paid for the 3-Day Shoot, please send a printout of the emailed confirmation with your check to:

On a final note, we are looking into making doors for the Lean-To out at the Range. If that fits into “your line of work” and you have some suggestions, please contact either Capt. Lester Thomas, our Props Hand, or one of the Vile Bunch.

See you out on the range!

Foreman

Hi Pards!

I want to start by THANKING Trader Mose who donated a 10 by 20 canopy to our club!! This canopy works to protect our fine looking Long Riders from the cold rain and scorching sun. As it turned out we utilized it for our July shoot and the shade from the canopy and pavilion felt pretty good!!!

How about all that setup we did for RAIN and all that SUNSHINE we got instead??! Guess things worked out fine just the same.

Because we only had 23 shooters, our posse size was at a minimum. That meant that everyone had to do more than one job. It was very impressive how everyone pitched in, worked and did more than their share – without one complaint. Thanks to you all!!!

The usual crew showed up Saturday for set-up, except for Elk Creek Ken, who had a medical problem. We hope you feel better real soon Ken.

The shoot went quite well. Lunch break was at noon. We left the range hot so that anyone who wanted to shoot, could do so. Shooting was done by 1:45 PM and the tear down was completed by 2:30 PM. Again, thanks to all for your help with this.

We’ll be looking forward to hearing all the news from Loco Poco Lobo and Nawlins Kid about the SASS regional shoot they attended in New Hampshire. Rumor has it that they hobnobbed with EVIL Roy!!

Editor’s Note: Yes we did!

Looking forward to seeing one & all at the 3-Day Shoot.

No Justice for Polly Beck Hilderbrand

Poor Polly. She bravely stood between two quarreling men, Zeke Proctor and Jim Kesterson when they went for their guns on February 13, 1872, and Proctor’s bullet ended her life. The Beck family took up the cause to avenge her death and when Proctor’s court date was scheduled two unruly mobs, one Beck supporters, one Proctor’s, formed outside the Cherokee courthouse in what would one day be Adair County, Oklahoma. Shortly after the trial began, a federal posse led by Deputy US Marshals J.G. Peavy and J. G. Owens and a host of other Beck supporters pushed its way into the courtroom and all hell broke loose. Once the smoke cleared Owens was dead as well as many others from both sides. To top it off, the next day Proctor was acquitted in Polly’s death. Poor Polly.

Owens-Blevins Shoot-Out

In 1887 a bitter range war between the cattle-herding Grahams and the sheep-herding Tewksburys resulted in Sheriff Commodore Perry Owens acting to apprehend Andy Blevins, a Graham supporter and rustler with a standing arrest warrant, after Graham bragged about killing two Tweksbury men in an ambush at their cabin. As Owens approached the Blevins home during Sunday Dinner on September 4, 1887 Andy’s half-brother John Blevins opened the door and opened fire, and with the aid of other family members including 15-year old Sam Blevins, a fierce firefight ensued. In the end Sam and Andy and Mose Roberts lay dead, and half brother John was wounded. Sheriff Owens was unscathed.

Four Dead in Five Seconds!

In 1881 the Manning Brothers stole 30 head of cattle in Mexico and drove them to Texas to sell. After a small posse chasing them turned up dead, a posse of more than 75 men from Mexico followed to investigate. After finding the bodies of two dead investigators from the first posse, Constable Krempkau entered Keating’s Saloon in El Paso, and a drunken rustler named John Hale grabbed ex-City Marshall George Campbell’s gun and started shooting. Despite the arrival of Marshal Dallas Stoudenmire (who had an errant shot hit a Mexican bystander) and the retreat of Campbell claiming it was “not his fight”, in the end Campbell and Krempkau lay dead. Campbell’s last words: “You s.o.b. you have murdered me!” Meet your fate, Constable.

Masterson's Apprentice

Timothy Isaiah “Longhair Jim” Courtright made a lucrative living by selling protection services to gambling dens and saloons in exchange for a piece of their profits. When Courtright approached Luke Short to offer his services, Short told him to “go to hell”, and that his (Short’s) gunfighting skills would be all that was needed to defend his White Elephant Saloon. As a Dodge City gunfighter Short was a skilled shooter, so this may have been sufficient. However, on February 8, 1887 Short and Courtright quarreled and started a gunfight, while Bat Masterson stood at Short’s side. Short shot off Courtright’s thumb, and Courtright attempted a “border shift” by switching his handgun to his uninjured hand. But Short was faster…

Buckshot Roberts' Last Stand

After Billy The Kid and his Regulators spotted Buckshot Roberts entering the Blazer’s Mill Post Office they tried to get him to surrender rather than fight, Roberts refused and holed up in the mill while the Regulators attempted to talk him out. Eventually patience ran out and Roberts defended himself with his rifle, scoring multiple hits on targets including killing Dick Brewer instantly with a shot to the eye, and even knocking Billy senseless with his rifle barrel! Eventually Roberts was hit and died in agony 36 hours later despite attempts by a doctor to save him. Billy was later asked about the fight, to which he replied “Yes sir, he licked our crowd to a finish.” High praise indeed.

[column]

Start: At the sound of the buzzer, shooter will engage targets for the caliber chosen in any sequence as long as the targets are not double-tapped (i.e. targets must be shot one then another, not repeatedly for two or more consecutive shots).

Scoring: Counters count Hits only. Hits are the primary scoring method, with time as the tiebreaker. For this stage, the shooter must announce his/her caliber choice to the scorer before the stage begins. .22 rifle shooters are scored in repeating or single shot rifle OPEN category, depending on action type.

IF time allows, shooters may shot a second gun of a different caliber, but must wait until all shooters have completed their first gun.

***THIS STAGE IS OPTIONAL!***

After several skirmishes and questionable acts by both sides the Regulators are surrounded in Lincoln, and holed up in the McSween House and the Ellis Store. Doolin Gang Shootout!

Oklahoma: a posse of U.S. Marshals, along with 27 deputies and Indian Police are headed toward a town called Ingalls to clean out members of the Doolin and Dalton Gang, who are drinking and gambling at the town’s saloon. The resulting fight was bloodier and fiercer than the OK Corral, with many, including bystanders and the bartender, being killed or wounded. It’s September 1, 1893 and “Arkansas Tom” Jones, sick in bed at the adjacent hotel, just shot down Deputy Marshal Newcomb Red Buck, you realize it’s going to take more than gunfire to root these fellas out.
