Safety Officer

Howdy,

Once again we had a safe shoot.  Our new rifle/shotgun racks worked out well. Hopefully we will have a couple more by our next match. The new targets have a nice ring to them and should last a long time.

When purchasing ammo make sure that its pure lead.  There are some low recoil shotgun shells with steel shot, this is not SASS approved and can damage our targets.

See you down the trail!

Howdy,

Once again we had a safe shoot, although we were a little bit blown away!  At least the rain gods stayed away, so that we could finish our 3-Day Shoot.

The trial Wild Bunch stage was enjoyed by the shooters, so next year we will have a three stage Wild Bunch match.

Good news, not only are we getting new rifle targets, but we are also getting a couple of new rifle/shotgun racks.  They will allow us to stage the long guns horizontally and make it easier to retrieve without bending over.

Howdy,

Once again the weather was perfect for shooting the bad guys. With all the shooting, we still were safe and had fun.

Howdy,

This month, the new rule is in effect for overloading the rifle.  The following report is from Hipshot, (SASS Wild Bunch) and PaleWolf Brunelle (SASS RO Committee).

Overloading the rifle (SASS Wild Bunch)

Overloading a rifle on a stage is not a safety issue. The safety comes into play if the shooter has any rounds left in the rifle after he/she has fired the rifle and committed to the next gun. Then, and only then, a safety shall be issued if a live round is left anywhere in the rifle.

  • Should the shooter realize that they have loaded too many rounds and safely ejects those rounds, it’s a no call.
  • Should the shooter fire more rounds than called for in the stage, it would be a “P” for using illegally acquired ammunition.

What’s the Call? (Interpreted by PaleWolf Brunelle)

Stage calls for 9 rounds in the rifle. Shooter loads 10 rounds at the loading table. What’s the call if:

  1. Shooter shoots 9 rounds and ejects the 10th round…safely restages rifle “open & empty”.
    • NO CALL – NO MSV penalty for overloading. Rifle is considered “safe to leave shooter’s hands“.
  2. Shooter kicks out the first round and then shoots the next 9 rounds.
    • “P” + miss (use of “illegally acquired” ammunition)
  3. Shooter shoots 5 rounds, then kicks one out, and then shoots the next 4 rounds.
    • “P” + miss (use of “illegally acquired” ammunition)
  4. Shooter shoots 9 rounds then puts down open rifle and then shoots the next gun.
    • MSV for an unfired round remaining in long gun action or magazine

    or

    • SDQ if round is chambered (e.g. lever closes when restaged)

Safety Officer

Howdy,

It was nice to visit and shoot with you all once again after the long winter.  The rain held off , and we had another safe and fun shoot.

I would like to give a quick refresher course on the importance of the counter/spotter jobs. As a spotter, you need to be very alert and stand in a position where you can observe the shooter and the targets. In the event that a shooter has an edge hit, you will be able to see it so you can record it as a hit instead of a miss.

Howdy,

Once again we all gathered together to enjoy our monthly match. We shot under the pavilion (and while being safe) a lot lead was dispensed at the bad guys. It goes to show people can have fun while being safe.

It was nice to see an old pard, Bristol Bisley, come back to a match!

Howdy,

Once again the Annual 3-Day was fun and safe, (for the first 2 days). The rain gods may have stopped us shooting on Sunday, but we will have another chance to get those bad guys that thought they could get away on Sunday.

Honestly, you are making my job easy. On Friday during the side matches, everyone pitched in on safety.  On Saturday the posses ran well will no issues.

Howdy,

The weather was a bit hot at the last match. Even with the high temps the steel was ringing and the shooters were having a good time.  It was nice to see some old pards come back to shoot with us after a few years. Thanks again for making my job easy by being safe!!!!

Howdy,

Once again we played cowboy under the pavilion and the tent. The good news is that we used them for shade instead of fending off the rain gods.  The ringing of steel brought smiles and even in close quarters, everyone had fun and was safe. Thanks again for making my job easy!!!!!

Don’t forget, for those with a single gun, we now offer the category of single gun reload. Tell Lucky Dog when you sign up at registration.

Howdy,

Once again Mother Nature insisted that we play cowboy under the pavilion.  Even with the tight quarters we all had fun ringing the steel and did it in a safe way.  Three shooters got to shoot a 1911 on the long range stage and they had smiles on there faces. May the rain gods play somewhere else on our next match Sunday!!!!

Howdy,

The signs of spring have arrived and a new shooting season is a upon us.

At the Annual meeting, we decided to bring back the gunfighter category after a long hiatus.

The gunfighter class is the only class that allows two loaded revolvers out at the same time, both revolvers can also be cocked at the same time, but only fired one at a time.

The other new class is Wild Bunch (WB). Any full size single stack steel frame 1911 style semi-auto pistol in .45 ACP caliber can be used.  The 1911 spec requirements  can be found on the SASS website in the Wild Bunch handbook or on the website

Wild Bunch for Dummies.

The Wild Bunch is shot as either a side match or as a stand alone main match competition in SASS.  The Long Riders will make it a regular shooting category, which will be shot at the same time as the cowboy stages with the same target sequences.  However, the WB will have two sub categories. Traditional will be WBT and Modern will be WBM.  Also, WB competitors will not compete against any other cowboy categories.

The LR rules for WB are a little different than the standard SASS match rules.  We will allow any SASS legal main match rile and shotgun.  Also the shotguns will not be Preloaded!!!!

At the loading table the WB shooter will load two magazines with five rounds each.  One magazine will be loaded in the 1911 and the pistol will be holstered . There will be no racking of a round in the chamber!!!!!!

After shooting the 1911 string, the magazine is removed and then the pistol will be placed on a table or prop.  After the shooter finishes the stage, the Timer Operator will clear the gun and then the slide is returned to battery.  The gun is holstered until the next stage.  Ammo for the 1911 is the same as cowboy -  Lead Bullets Only.

The attire for WB can be either Cowboy or Rough Rider. For types of holsters that can be used, check the Wild Bunch for Dummies web site.

Howdy,

The weather was cool with no liquid sunshine. Raunchy Rick – you did a good job again!!. Being able to shoot from under the pavilion gave shooters more room to roll their pumpkins. Once again the pumpkins didn’t stand a chance!  Even with an extended pumpkin stage, it showed once again we can have fun and shoot SAFE!!!!

Howdy,

Mother Nature decided to give us liquid sunshine. Once again all shooting was done in the pavilion and the canopy attached to the pavilion which worked just fine. We all had a safe and enjoyable day. Also I would like to say welcome to our newest young shooter Young’un. He did a good job shooting safe.

Safety Officer

Howdy,
Mother Nature decided to show us what summer should be. IT WAS HOT!!! Once again all the match participants still had fun ringing the steel, despite the heat. There were no safety issues since everyone kept safety in mind and helped keep the pardners cool, which made my job easy.

Safety Officer

Howdy,

We had another great shoot, with no safety violations.  Thanks to all for making my job easy.

We are still on a learning curve with the new targets. Thanks to the pards that came early to help setup on Sunday. We can still use some extra hands on the morning of the shoot to help make setup go a little faster.

We are still looking for ratchet donations and  3/4 socket. If you have an old one ratchet sitting around collecting dust, we would gladly accept it. I would like to have one for each stage to help speed up tear down.

Howdy Pards,

Once again we had a fine day to shoot, Good job RR.

I had a conversation with the salesman from Action Targets.  He recommended a way to adjust the targets to get a little more movement.  We will try to make this adjustment this month, but we will need helpers on Sunday morning to setup the targets.  We also ask that helpers bring a ratchet and  3/4 in socket to assist in setup  and take down.

See you down the Trail.

Nawlins Kid

Safety Officer

Howdy,

It nice to see a lot of old pards and meet some new ones after the long winter. The sound of targets being hit was music to everyone’s ears. Once I would like to thank everyone for making my job easy, by being safe and having fun.

Starting in June any 22 cal. Single Action Revolver will be allowed in the long range scenario. Yer better practice, those little ducks may be hard to shoot.
