Happy New Year!  I hope everyone had a wonderful and safe holiday season.

The New Year gives everyone a fresh start and thoughts turn to planning vacations and activities for the year.  Remember to earmark the 4th Sunday of the month from April through October for the monthly Long Riders shoot.  Don’t forget to book your vacation for Friday, August 20th through the 22nd for the Annual Long Riders Three-Day Shoot.  We will be determining the theme for this year at the Annual Meeting in February.

Please plan on attending the Annual Long Riders meeting to voice your choice(s) and help the Vile Bunch plan 2010.  It will start at 10:00 AM at the Shortsville Rod & Gun Club on Saturday, February 27th.  The clubhouse will be open after 9 AM and we will have some refreshments available.  We need you to get out and VOTE on your officers for 2010 and help us set the direction for the new shooting year.  Remember, our club operates under modified S.A.S.S. rules according to the way the majority of our members prefer.

The nominations for the 2010 year are as follows:

Trail Boss (President) – Loco Poco Lobo a.k.a. Marissa Andolino

Foreman (Vice President) –Raunchy Rick a.k.a. Richard Shultz

Paymaster (Treasurer) – Calamity Janet a.k.a. Janet Travis

Clerk (Secretary) – Cactus Jack a.k.a. Gregory Travis

Safety Officer    – Nawlins Kid a.k.a. Samuel Andolino

The following members are willing to accept appointments for 1 year to the board:

The appointments will be voted on at the first 2010 Vile Bunch board meeting.  If you have a pet project or special skills, we could use your help in the appointed positions or special committees.  Please contact a Vile Bunch member for more information or to volunteer.

As always, to vote on topics, you must be a member of the Long Riders, Inc.  If you have not already renewed your membership, please send it in to Calamity Janet postmarked by January 31, the renewal cut-off deadline.  Since Calamity Janet will be enjoying some vacation time soon, please let L.P.L. know if you renew before the annual meeting.  And even if you are a Life Member, we need you to update your information.

If you have any additional topics that you would like to add to the agenda, please contact L.P.L. at 585-467-4429 or trailboss@long-riders.org.  Additional nominations will be accepted by contacting L.P.L. or can be made on the floor during the election portion of the meeting, which is run by our clerk.

The end of our shooting season has arrived.  Hunting season has started for some and the holidays are nearly upon us.  As we all get ready to hibernate through the cold, snowy winter season, let’s take some time to reflect back on our 2009 shooting season.

The Long Riders and Vile Bunch made several changes this year.  We bought some new targets, canopies, and water jugs. We brought in a new caterer for our 3-Day Shoot and eliminated some of the 3-Day Shoot expenses. The revamped website also allowed us to eliminate more costs and improve communications. We received a large canopy donation and monetary contributions from our members that helped even though times are tough for some people recently.

The Vile Bunch is getting ready to plan the 2010 season. If you would like to run for an office, volunteer for an appointed position, or just want to volunteer some of your time, please contact me or a Vile Bunch member. Also, if you have any topics you would like to discuss at our Annual meeting in February, please let me know, so I can add it to our agenda.

Don’t forget to fill out your Long Riders 2010 Membership application. After submitting the form, you will receive an email confirming your membership application receipt. Please mail it with your check to our treasurer (her address will be at the bottom of the confirmation email). This emergency contacts and medical information is very important and will only be used in case of emergencies.

See you out on the range – next year!

The end of our social shooting season is soon. But don’t hibernate yet, we have one more shoot!

For those who are not aware, in inclement weather, we use the pavilion and canopy to setup our stages and keep everything and everyone dry. We plan to utilize less steel and minimize props since the weather may be iffy. That should also minimize the take down so we can get to the clubhouse for our pot-luck lunch finale. We will also be “tarping” up the lean-to for the winter.

For those electronic folks who have said that the newsletters or scenarios do not print out well, please look over on the left-hand side of the screen for the Adobe Icon pdf and the phrase “PDF for Print”. Click on that link to display the PDF version and then print it to your printer.

Don’t forget to fill out your Long Riders 2010 Membership application. After submitting the form, you will receive an email confirming your membership application receipt. Please mail it with your check to our treasurer (her address will be at the bottom of the confirmation email).

Also, if you have any topics you would like to discuss at our Annual meeting in February, please let a Vile Bunch member know at the October shoot or send one of us an email. I will add it to our agenda.

See you out on the range!

WOW, the 3 Day Shoot was a hot one – literally! Even though the economy is in the tank, we managed to host 46 shooters for our long weekend. From all the feedback I heard, everyone had a great time, despite the heat. Thanks to Raunchy Rick for bringing the ice on Saturday and Sunday to keep us all cool.

For those who did not sign up for the catered dinner, you really missed a great one! Although I normally prefer pulled pork over chicken, the chicken was smokin’ scrumptuous! The green beans were fresh and although I opted for carrot cake (my favorite), I heard rave reviews of the chocolate raspberry cake. Bad to the Bone was bbbbbad (or in other words – GREAT! [and my apologies to George Thorogood])

Congratulations to Prairie Pickle – the winner of the 45/70 H&R Single-Shot Rifle raffle. Thank you to all the 3-Day attendees who contributed either money or prizes for the event. Your generosity was appreciated by all since our normal donors were unable to donate in this bad economic time.

To see who was “top of their class”, see Raunchy’s article or the published scores under the following:

“3 Day Shoot” –> “2009″ –> “August 09 Match”
“3 Day Shoot” –> “2009″ –> “August 09 Long Range”
“3 Day Shoot” –> “2009″ –> “Carnival”

Also, for your viewing pleasure, the posse pictures are now posted as well as a handful of pictures and videos. See the following:

“3 Day Shoot” –> “2009″ –> “Posses”
“3 Day Shoot” –> “2009″ –> “Photos”
“3 Day Shoot” –> “2009″ –> “Videos”

For those who paid $5 for prints, I am working with Preskit Compadre to get them professionally printed. We may not be able to have them at the September shoot, but they should definitely be available at our October Shoot and Potluck Lunch event. Check back in next month’s newsletter article for more information.

A special thank you to Mrs. Badfingers! She attended the June Long Riders shoot and gave me some more photos for our site. Check them out under the “Photos” menu and “2009 Photos” submenu.

See you in September – out on the range!

The date for the 3-Day Shoot is just around the corner. Get yer guns and duds ready!

Nawlins Kid and I just got back from "The Great Nor’easter" (2009 SASS New England Regional) held in Pelham, NH. It was a fun shoot and we picked up tips from many good shooters, including Evil Roy – who by the way, shoots reduced but not wimpy loads!

Just a reminder, we will have a 45/70 H&R Single-Shot Rifle for the raffle this year. You do not need to be present to win and tickets will be $5 each or 5 tickets for $20. The 3-Day Raffles and Auction will continue based upon your generous donations. Please bring something cowboy/cowgirl-ish to the shoot. Also, raffle and auction items that significant others and little cowpokes like are appreciated too! Given the state of the economy, vendor donations are down, but we hope club members will help out with their own donations.

The raffle items will be setup Saturday morning while we shoot and tickets will be available for purchase at lunchtime on Saturday. We will continue to have 2 different colored tickets at 50 cents and $1 levels. And don’t forget the 50/50 raffle – it is a quick and easy way to donate to the club and maybe share in half the proceeds. Your odds are certainly much better than the Lotto!

Back by popular demand, the Cowboy Casino will be in the Clubhouse after the catered dinner. Casino cowboy and cowgirl workers will be limited to bidding on 1 item at the auction, so if you volunteer, make that bid count. Participants can bid on any number of prizes using pazoozas. A banker will be available to convert your dollars to Pazoozas, in case you lose your shirt at the table with your Trail Earnings (pazoozas in your packet).

If you haven’t paid for the 3-Day Shoot, please send a printout of the emailed confirmation with your check to:

On a final note, we are looking into making doors for the Lean-To out at the Range. If that fits into “your line of work” and you have some suggestions, please contact either Capt. Lester Thomas, our Props Hand, or one of the Vile Bunch.

Hope everyone is getting ready for the 3-Day Shoot, the Vile Bunch certainly is!

We will have a 45/70 H&R Single-Shot Rifle for the raffle again this year.  You do not need to be present to win and tickets will be $5 each or 5 tickets for $20.  The 3-Day Raffles and Auction will continue based upon your generous donations.  The raffle items will be setup Saturday morning while we shoot and tickets will be available for purchase at lunchtime on Saturday.  We will continue to have 2 different colored tickets at 50 cents and $1 levels.  And don’t forget the 50/50 raffle – it is a quick and easy way to donate to the club and maybe share in half the proceeds!  Your odds are certainly much better than the Lotto.

In case you haven’t already seen the information, we have a new caterer this year – Bad to the Bone. It was recommended by one of the Vile Bunch members and unanimously agreed to after reviewing their menu and prices. We chose to go with the BBQ Chicken and Pulled Pork for meat variety. For our sides, we will have Southern BBQ Beans, Smoked Green Beans w/ Ham Hocks, Cornbread, and either Chocolate Cake or Carrot Cake for dessert. Nawlins and I checked them out and their food is finger lickin’ good! Check out their website for more information: www.bad2thebonebbq.com

If you haven’t already submitted your 3-Day Application, please see the application form online, you will find it under “3 Day Shoot”, “2009 “, “3-Day Shoot Application”. Please fill the 3-Day Application form out and send a printout of the emailed confirmation with your check to:

Another beautiful day to shoot and test our new target staging system.  The setup went very well on Saturday, but we now need some help on Sunday shoot mornings to help setup the new pistol targets.  They are lighter, but the drawback is that they are portable.  Therefore, we do not dare put them up on Saturday because they may grow feet!  If people could attend a half-hour early on Sunday and bring a rachet and 3/4 inch socket, that would help.  If you can donate a rachet and socket to the club, that would be great too!

Our 50-50 raffle went very well.  Uncle Rog was a natural and pulled in the money.  Our winner was Wild Will, but he gave it back to the club. Thanks Wild Will for subsidizing the 3-Day Catering costs!  He was also our only clean shooter of the month.  Way to go Wild Will!

As promised, we are publishing the 3-Day Shoot Application early this year so you can plan/budget earlier for attending the event. We are going with a new caterer, per the annual meeting vote, but it will cost us more. The Vile Bunch decided that we will use the Long Rider portion of 50-50 proceeds in the next 3 months to help offset the cost. However, we did need to raise the dinner price by $2 to help ensure that we do not lose too much money.

Don’t forget to sign-up for the 3-Day Shoot.  If you are online, you will find it under “3 Day Shoot”, “2009″, “3-Day Shoot Application”. Please fill the 3-Day Application form out and send in the printed confirmation with your check to Calamity Janet before August 1st. For our snail-mail friends, see the attached application and follow the instructions on the form before August 1st.

Hope everyone has wintered well!  It is time to get ready for another Long Riders shooting season.

Our annual meeting was held the end of February.  Jeremiah Grimm was gracious to take minutes while Cactus Jack basked in the sun.  See the minutes later in the newsletter if you were unable to attend.

We have some exciting new things planned for 2009.  Raunchy Rick has some details in his newsletter article.

What else do we have planned?  Well, in case you did not notice, the website has changed (apologies to our friends without a computer).  Yours truly has been hard at work over the winter months devising and implementing the new site that you now see.  This should make it easier for the Vile Bunch to update information without the assistance of the webmaster (or webmistress as I refer to myself).  Please check things out and let me know how you like it or if you encounter any problems.

The only thing that is not currently available on the website are the scores.  We are only going to publish the current year of scores and well, we have not started shootin’ yet!  This new format may also allow us to expand features for the paying Long Riders in the future.

At the annual meeting, we displayed a free target from Action Target for discussion on new targets.  We voted to purchase some of these new portable targets to replace the pistol targets that are starting to cup.  They include a stand that can set the target at 2 different heights – low or high, and a round head.  The target is attached to the stand by 2 bolts behind the head.  The manufacturer has guaranteed the price he gave Nawlins and LPL in December.  The round-head target and stand is $95 and a shaped target (coffin, tombstone, buffalo, spade, heart, club, diamond, or cowboy) with the stand is $155.  These prices include free shipping and the heads are made of AR500 armored steel.  Raunchy Rick and Nawlins Kid took the free target out for a spin.  The results – no lead splatter with a .30-.30 at a 12 yard range.  Now that’s impressive!

At the annual meeting, a challenge was issued to the Long Riders members!  Elk Creek Ken started things rolling with a challenge to all club members to match his $50 a target (and he has already submitted it).  Next thing we knew, Laredo Kidd matched it.  Then people were offering to buy a new target for $95.

So here is the scoop on the challenges:

  • contribute $155 for a shaped target with stand, and get an old target and an old stand (the LPL/NK challenge)
  • contribute $95 for a target (head and stand), get an old target and an old stand (the “cast of characters” challenge)
  • contribute $50 (the Elk Creek Ken and Laredo Kidd challenge)

If you cannot afford to buy a target or $50 challenge, we could use any contribution you can make!  If you cannot afford to spend the money this month, we will accept I.O.U.’s for payment later in the year.

We would like to wrap up the donations and get our order into the manufacturer in April, so please send any donations in to Calamity Janet as soon as possible.

See you out on the range!

The first shoot is behind us and went very well!  I hope everyone is getting used to the new website format. I have received a few nice comments, but no one has reported any problems – yet. The scores are now ready on the system as well. Look above in the menu labeled “Match Results”, sub-menu “2009″, then either “Match Scores” and “April 09 Match” or “April 09 Long Range” and “Range Scores”.

As Raunchy mentioned, the new target was tested successfully at the April shoot. Although it may not sing like the old ones, there was no lead splatter reported and the target remained standing on it’s own (at the high setting) without any staking. After the shoot, we looked at the ground around the target and there was a nice trench in front of the target with near perfect “squashed” and spent lead bullets.

We have received payments on the challenges and donations. Some more folks have come out of hibernation and met the challenges as well. Although we have placed our order (update – the targets are HERE!), there is still some time remaining to make a contribution. If you cannot afford to buy a target or $50 challenge, we could use any contribution you can make! If you cannot afford to spend the money this month, we will accept I.O.U.’s for payment later in the year. Please send any donations in to Calamity Janet.
