John Wayne

This weekend pays tribute to one of the all-time great Western Movies stars, the iconic John Wayne.  So, polish those shootin’ irons, get yer ammo ready, throw some extra dust on yer duds, and we’ll see you out on the range at Shortsville where we’ll act out famous scenes from some of Wayne’s great movies.  Heck, ain’t this why we became cowboys anyways?


 

“Hondo”
(1953)

 

Scenario
You’re Hondo Lane, dispatch rider for the cavalry. Your unit has been sent out to relocate the settlers from deep in hostile Apache territory. You get to the cabin of a woman that you’ve been seeing, and tell her to get her son and pack up. They’re not going too willingly though; they don’t seem to think there’s any real danger.
As you argue over the plight of the Indians, you’re surrounded by a murderous band and need to fight them off to save the hides of your new family.

Ammo
5 or 10 pistol, 10 rifle, 4 shotgun

Starting Position
Standing behind rock, rifle safely held at Port Arms, ten rounds in magazine.

Safely holstered pistol(s) loaded with five rounds (each).

Shotgun safely staged on rock, four shotshells on your person.

Procedure
When ready, yell “Everybody gets dead. Today it’s their turn.”

At the buzzer, Nevada Sweep the rifle targets,1-2-3-4-3-2-1-2-3-4.

Make rifle safe and engage pistol targets in a continuous Nevada Sweep 1-2-3-4-5.

Two pistol shooters, repeat.

Make pistols safe and engage shotgun targets in any order you please.

Time stops.

 

 

“The Searchers”
(1956)

Scenario
You’re Ethan Edwards, and you and your blanket head companion have been searching for your kidnapped niece. You hook up with the local troop of Texas Rangers and travel over the miles looking for the Comanche tribe led by the infamous Scar.
As your merry band rides over a hill and along a ridge you begin to notice you’re being followed by Scar and a large army of Comanch on both sides of the ridge. You spur your horses back to the supply wagon and hunker down behind some rocks on the opposite shore to make your stand.

Ammo
5 or 10 pistol, 10 rifle, 4 shotgun

Starting Position
Standing behind pieces of “driftwood”, rifle loaded with ten rounds safely held in the rifle stand.

Safely holstered pistol(s) loaded with five rounds (each).

Shotgun safely staged, four shotshells on your person

Procedure
When ready, say “Well Reverend, looks like you’ve got yourself surrounded.”

At the buzzer, alternately engage R1 & R2 with five shots then R3 & R4 with five shots.

Make rifle safe and alternately engage pistol targets 1, 5, 2, 4, 3.  Two gun shooters, repeat.

Make pistols safe and engage shotgun targets any damn way you want, you’ve been thinkin’ hard enuff.

Time stops.

“Rio Bravo”
(1959)

Scenario
You’re Sheriff John T. Chance and you’ve got the brother of powerful rancher in your jail. Now he’s coming to break him out and brought an army of men along with him to help.
You? You’ve got a cripple, a drunk, and a young whippersnapper to fend off the meanest bunch of cutthroats in the county. You barricade yourself in the jailhouse, load up your guns and wait for the shooting to start. You have Stumpy watch the prisoner and the kid go for help, while you try to keep the drunk sober.

Ammo
5 or 10 pistol, 9 rifle, 4 shotgun

Starting Position
Standing at window, two safely holstered pistols loaded with five rounds (each).

Rifle loaded with nine rounds, safely staged on wall.

Shotgun safely staged on wall, 4 shotshells on your person.

Procedure
When ready, shout “Sorry don’t git it done, Pilgrim!”

At the buzzer, thru the window, sweep rifle targets in a Progressive/Regressive Nevada Chimney sweep (1-2-2-3-3-3-2-2-1).

Make rifle safe and, thru the doorway, engage pistol targets in a 1-2-3-2-1.  Two gun shooters repeat.

Make pistols safe and engage shotgun targets thru the doorway 1-2-3-4.

Time stops.

“True Grit”
(1969)

Scenario
You’re Marshal “Rooster” Cogburn and you’ve been tracking the scum sucking pig Lucky Ned Pepper and his gang. You finally track them down, but they’ve taken a young spirit of a girl hostage and expect you let them go for her safe return. They don’t know you’ve sent that pain in the ass Texas Ranger off to rescue her and now you sit in an open field between them and freedom.
They don’t think a one-eyed fat man can take them, but Mattie knew you had true grit and you’re about to show them some of it.

Ammo
5 or 10 pistol, 9 rifle, 2 shotgun

Starting Position
Seated on horse, rifle loaded with nine rounds held staged safely.

Pistol(s) loaded with five rounds (each), safely holstered.

Shotgun safely staged on stand; four rounds on your person

Procedure
When ready, yell “Fill your hands, you son of a bitch.”

At the buzzer, remain seated, draw pistol, and Nevada Sweep pistol targets; 1-2-3-4-5.  Two gun shooters repeat.

Make pistol safe, dismount horse, move to rifle, and engage rifle targets in a continuous Nevada Sweep; 1-2-3-4-5.

Make rifle safe and engage shotgun targets, 1-2-1-2.

Time stops.

“The Big Trail”

(1930)

Scenario

You are Breck Coleman (John Wayne), a young trapper who just got back to Missouri from his travels near Santa Fe, seeking to avenge the death of an old trapper friend who was killed the winter before along the Santa Fe Trail for his furs.  You were asked by a large group of settlers to scout their caravan west.  You agree to scout for the train, so you can keep an eye on the villains and kill them as soon as they reach their destination.  As part of your job, you provide provisions (meat) for the people in the wagon train with your sharpshooting skills.

Ammo

10 Single Shot Rifle, 5 pistol, 10 Pistol Caliber Rifle, 10 Rifle, 4 shotgun, or 10 .22 caliber rifle

Targets

3 long range rifle, 2 pistol/rifle caliber rifle, 2 pistol/shotgun, .22 gallery target (weather permitting)

Starting Position

Standing with safely holstered pistol(s),
Rifle safely held at Cowboy Port Arms, or

Shooter in position with single-shot rifle 

Procedure

At the buzzer, shooters engage the appropriate target for their caliber, alternating shots on 2 targets, except for the .22 target.

POSSE MEMBERS: you will keep your same work assignments on this stage!
POSSE LEADERS: Keep the action moving- run this stage like any other. Try to accommodate two shooters at once, shooting different banks of targets. Position shooters so brass falls on mat.

PLEASE NOTE that there is a SEPARATE scoring sheet for this stage! Do NOT put scores for Long Range on the regular sheets. Time is not the primary scoring method, hits are. For this stage, the shooter must announce his/her caliber choice to the scorer before the stage begins. .22 rifle shooters are scored in repeating or single shot rifle OPEN category, depending on action type. Shotgun Stampede is also scored separately.

Counters count Hits only, last shot stops the clock. Time breaks ties in number of hits only.

If time allows, shooters may shoot a second gun of a different caliber, but after all shooters have completed their first gun.
